Morning News – 15/05/2021

6620418Good morning...

I did some more work on Focus Ratings R9 yesterday.

Just to refresh your memory (and for the members of Intelligent Betting who now receive this Morning News email)...

I have two primary ratings agencies;

Focus Ratings is a self learning ratings agency and produces its core ratings which I call R4.

Advance Ratings is a purely form based ratings agency and produces ratings which I call ADR.

So, two totally independent ratings agencies which produce ratings in totally different ways.

When both of those ratings agencies agree on the top rated horse, that race then becomes what I call a Focus Ratings R8 race.

For those races, I set R8 to equal 1.

If those two ratings agencies also agree that the second rated horses are second rated by both agencies then R8 equals 2, and so forth.

It's a bit like the 3 guys on the old version of Top Gear agreeing on which car is the best hot hatchback or the best grand tourer - it almost never happens but, when it does, you know that it's going to be a pretty good car.

R9 is just those R8 rated races where Focus Ratings can rate every horse in the race.

There aren't so many of these races every day but, if you want to do some of your own analysis, you can see the raw data that I'm working from on this spreadsheet (containing just over 5 years of data)... http://focusratings.com/docs/R9.xlsx

Perhaps you'll come up with an angle that I've missed.

The whole objective of my interest is to come up with a series of Portfolio bets that Focus Ratings members can subscribe to for free.

However, these will be bets that appeal to my way of betting where I bet the race rather than the horse. You can read about that strategy here... https://intelligent-betting.com/horse-racing/bet-the-race-not-the-horse/

So, the first thing to do is to select (on a daily basis) the races to bet on.

Initially I am going to use the following rules...

If there are 1 or 2 meetings, I shall select only 1 race to bet upon.

If there are 3 to 5 meetings I shall select 2 races to bet upon.

If there are 6 meetings or more I shall select 3 races to bet upon.

The selection of those R9 rated races to bet upon will be based upon the overall accuracy of the ratings.

For every selected race I shall (automatically) work out the best bets to take advantage of that race.

Thus, there may be a win bet on the top rated horse and a place bet on the top rated horse.

There may be a win bet on the second rated horse and a place bet on the second rated horse.

There may even be win and place bets (or, just a place bet) on the third rated horse.

Or, there could be a lay bet on the 3rd rated horse.

So, multiple bets on a single race.

It's a bit like dutching but the stakes are worked out differently - they are worked out using a version of the Kelly Criterion which I touched upon here... https://intelligent-betting.com/horse-racing/the-kelly-criterion/

I'll be working on this over the weekend and I will update you on my results early next week.

Finally, I would like to remind those of you who are Free members of Intelligent Betting that, on Tuesday the 18th of May, the price of Intelligent Betting is rising from £10 a month to £19.95 a month. This does not affect those people who are already Full members of Intelligent Betting who receive RSR (Really Simple Ratings), RSR Plus and our daily system selections as well as the new Expert Ratings.

So far this month, after just 2 weeks, our system selections have generated (assuming a 2% Betfair comission) a £276.06 profit on our initial bank of £200, betting to £10 stakes.

The actual results may be seen at http://intelligent-betting.com/results or you can look at the spreadsheet here... https://intelligent-betting.com/data/IB_May.xlsx

Once again, this is to £10 stakes based upon a £200 bank.

Personally, at this point I would take my profits and run but that is just a personal preference.

I would remove my £276 profits and put them aside to spend on red wine and smelly cheese (my 2 addictions and probably why, 18 years ago, I jacked in a perfectly good, well paid, job working as an IT Service Manager in the city to move to France) but might continue betting but to £5 stakes rather than the initial £10 stakes.

However, this is my personal preference and not advice for you; I will always report on the profits based upon level £10 stakes for every selection throughout the entire month.

I just like the idea of stopping at a profit but, not on a daily basis, but rather, at some point during the month when I can say to myself...

"I've made my bank in profits, I'll take that money and run and, continue betting but at half normal stakes."

Obviously, I'll lose out if the system selections remain profitable but I don't actually mind that - I'm very risk averse.

Oh, one last thing...

Tomorrow is a Sunday and I do like to take Sunday's off.

So there almost certainly won't be a Morning News tomorrow.

However, if I make headway on R9 today, I may decide to let you know about it.

There will be a Sunday Summary for Intelligent Betting members though.

Task List...

In order to be honest and truly transparent with you...

I will now be publishing my task list on the Morning News.

You will be able to see what I am working on and, more importantly, what progress I am making.

Here are the current tasks...

T01). Work out a number of strategies to utilise R9 and provide Focus Rating members free Portfolio Betting selections across a number of different betting strategies (win backing, place backing, dutching, laying and, the other thing that I described that I don't know what it is called) on a daily basis.

T02). For Compass Ratings, display, on screen and via a email PDF, the twice weekly updated trainer/jockey win/place strike rates.

T03). For Compass Ratings, complete the eBook that explains all the weird and wonderful things that I have learned about Hong Kong Horse racing.

T04). Complete PaperTradeIt.com - a free site where you can privately log your bets and get Strike Rate, POI (to ISP and BSP) data and losing run analysis on those bets.

T05). Re-launch Intelligent-Betting.com - very good good things are happening there as we speak and it is becoming a vital (and also, very profitable) tool for those who like to think about their betting.

I'm trying to knock off the easy/quick jobs first in order to reduce the size of the list; the size of the list scares me sometimes and, believe me, I have twice as many jobs on the Admin/BAU (Business As Usual - things like automated scripts, backups and server log file analysis - stuff that all website owners have to do) task list to get through as well.

Marketing Translations...

Cracking an international market is a goal of most growing corporations. It shouldn't be that hard, yet even the big multi-nationals run into trouble because of language and cultural differences. For example, observe the following examples below.

The name Coca-Cola in China was first rendered as Ke-kou-ke-la. Unfortunately, the Coke company did not discover until after thousands of signs had been printed that the phrase means "bite the wax tadpole" or "female horse stuffed with wax" depending on the dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 Chinese characters and found a close phonetic equivalent, "ko-kou-ko-le," which can be loosely translated as "happiness in the mouth."

In Taiwan, the translation of the Pepsi slogan "Come alive with the Pepsi Generation" came out as "Pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the dead."

Also in Chinese, the Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan "finger-lickin' good" came out as "eat your fingers off."

The American slogan for Salem cigarettes, "Salem - Feeling Free," got translated in the Japanese market into "When smoking Salem, you feel so refreshed that your mind seems to be free and empty."

When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "no va" means "it won't go." After the company figured out why it wasn't selling any cars, it renamed the car in its Spanish markets to the Caribe.

When Parker Pen marketed a ballpoint pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to say "It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you." However, the company mistakenly thought the spanish word "embarazar" meant embarrass. Instead the ads said that "It wont leak in your pocket and make you pregnant."

An American t-shirt maker in Miami printed shirts for the spanish market which promoted the Pope's visit. Instead of the desired "I Saw the Pope" in Spanish, the shirts proclaimed "I Saw the Potato."

Colgate introduced a toothpaste in France called Cue, the name of a notorious porno magazine.

In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water.
