Morning News

focus-ratings-mornoing newsGood morning...

I'm quite satisfied with yesterday's results.

It would have been profitable to have blindly backed the top rated horse and...

It would also have been profitable to have done the Trifecta in every race.

I spent some time watching the results for the strategy that I outlined yesterday.

I've created a spreadsheet and I'll talk a bit about that potential strategy later on.

By blindly backing the top three rated horse with the highest yield you would have made a small loss. 23.96 points would have been returned to 25 points staked.

I've decided only to look at races of 8 horses or more.

Anyway, I'll get to that, firstly let's get on and take a quick look at yesterday's results in more detail....

Yesterday's Results

Yesterday's Results, show a strike rate (for our top rated horse) of 24.14%.

Yesterday's Live Ratings, show a strike rate (for our top rated horse) of 25.81%.

The Overall Profit Index. If you had blindly backed every top three rated horse in all of the races you would have had 56.33 units returned to 87 units staked. The Overall Profit Index was, thus, -35.25%

Top Rated Horse - There were seven winners for the top rated horse from the 31 races yesterday. If you had blindly backed the top rated horse in all of the races you would have had 32.58 units returned to 29 units staked. The Top Rated Profit Index was, thus, 12.34%

2nd Rated Horse - There were two winners for the second rated horse from the 31 races yesterday. If you had blindly backed the second rated horse in all of the races you would have had 5.75 units returned to 30 units staked. The Second Rated Profit Index was, thus, -80.83%

3nd Rated Horse - There were three winners for the third rated horse from the 31 races yesterday. If you had blindly backed the third rated horse in all of the races you would have had 18 units returned to 28 units staked. The Third Rated Profit Index was, thus, -35.71%

Strategy...

I have created a spreadsheet that shows the results for every top three rated horse during 2014 that has the highest yield (of the top three rated horses.)

This can be found at... strategy2014.ods

I have broken the races into the following run bands... 5 to 7 runners, 8 to 16 runners and 16 plus runners.

I have done some basic analysis (shown on the Analysis tab) but will leave it to you to see if you can find some value in this potential strategy.

Now, I must say that I generate the forecast price (and, thus, the yield) at 9am and the prices (and, thus the yield) do change between then and race time.

This would suggest that the strategy will be more accurate for the earlier races.

In fact, yesterday the strategy began by giving a 63.67% profit on stakes after the first 6 races, dropped to a 31.5% profit on stakes after the first 13 races and, so on.

An example is the 2:40 at York.

Ribbons had a forecast SP of 4.25
Secret Gesture had a forecast SP of 6.00

Actual SPs

Ribbons 6/1
Secret Gesture 7/2

As you can see, Ribbons now has the highest SP and, in this case, the highest yield of the top three rated horses.

And paid better.

Place Prices on Betfair

Ribbons 2.63
Secret Gesture 1.81

This might suggest that it might be better to wait until 5 minutes before the race starts to work out which top three rated horse is highest on actual price. If there is enough demand, I'll create a widget/calculator on the site to do this for you.

Today

Today's early test ratings show 44 rated races from seven meetings.

Have a great day's racing!
