Morning News – 19/01/2021

6620418Good morning...

Today I am taking the day off from looking at the new dutching potential strategy.

Yesterday, I got the spreadsheet finished and, based on advice from Shaun T, I took a look at an additional strategy.

Shaun suggested that I work out the stakes as though I was dutching two horses but then forget to back to 2nd rated horse.

So, I am only backing the to rated horse but to "advised stakes."

Now, I love the idea of varying the stakes according to the risk and potential profit.

The correct way to do this is to use the Kelly Criterion (I wrote a post about this which can be seen here... http://focusratings.com/articles/kelly-criterion/) but that's a bit of a faff to work out so this way of doing it is far easier.

From the results I deducted the unprofitable race types and ended up with a strategy that, historically, gives

4.6 races a week

A 44.17% strike rate and...

A 116.91% profit on stakes.

I'll be heading back to dutching tomorrow,

Today I'll be thinking about what to do with R8 - what started as just something that I've been observing for a while now seems to have turned into something bigger than I expected.

A bit of distance and perspective is required.

Something to make you smile...

Shipping Manure...

Historical information you need to know about shipping Manure: In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship.

It was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large shipments of manure were common.

It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas.

As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen.

Methane began to build up below decks, and the first time someone came below at night, with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening.

After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term," Ship High In Transit" which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term "S.H.I.T," which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

You probably did not know the true history of this word.

Neither did I.

I always thought it was a golf term.
