Morning News

focus-ratings-mornoing newsGood morning...

I just wanted to update you on the problems that I had a few days ago.

Normally, the ratings are automatically compiled and sent out from my server (in Germany) so any local problems won't affect them being sent out.

However, on Sunday morning I got up early (2am) to do some bug fixes and start implementing some improvements that some members have asked for.

Every time I edit the code I switch off the automatic "send emails" part of it so that I get a chance to double check the ratings and then send them out manually.

What happened on Sunday was that I had done my updates, went and had a shower and my breakfast and, during that, we had the mother of all thunderstorms and then I lost the internet (as did everyone else for a 20km radius - we also lost our mobile phone network which is a bit strange?)

Thus, I couldn't get onto the server to switch the "send emails" bit back on - my car is off the road at the moment and so I couldn't even drive to the coast to use free wifi up there.

Very frustrating for me and...

My members as well, I'm sure.

I'm guessing that I'll need to invest in a smartphone (even though I really don't like smartphones) so that I can use it as a wifi hotspot in similar cases in the future.

Once again, I apologise for any inconvenience - it's lovely living in rural France but, we are a bit behind the times in terms of our infrastructure; a few years ago I did some contract work for France Telecom (our version of BT) and discovered that in my part of rural Brittany, the phone cabling was installed/renewed back in the 1950's! Part of the joy of living in rural Brittany is that we are very behind the times here - there are times when being up to date might also be quite nice?

I am still working through the backlog of emails but most of them should be answered by the above.

Yesterday was an average day (as far as the ratings are concerned) and I've got nothing to report.

To be honest, I was just glad that the ratings actually went out!

Work...

● A man is begging a judge to let him off jury duty because of his job. “I’m sure your company can get along fine without you for a few days,” the judge tells the man.

“I know,” the man answers. “But that’s what I’m trying to prevent them from figuring out.”

● A man goes on a job interview. The interviewer tells him that they are looking to hire someone who is responsible.

“Well, I’m your man,” the applicant replies. “At my last job, whenever anything went wrong, they said I was responsible.”

● “Bill,” a sad-faced man says to his coworker, “I just heard the news about your uncle falling off that cliff. I’m terribly sorry. Were the two of you close?”
“We were just close enough for me to push him,” Bill replies.

● An office manager is interviewing an applicant. He asks the woman if she has any unusual talents. She says she’d actually won a few national crossword puzzle contests. “Sounds good,” the office manager replies, “but we want someone who will be just as intelligent during office hours.”

“Oh,” says the applicant. “That’s good because that’s when I do most of my puzzles.”

Today

Today's early test ratings show 40 rated races from six meetings.

Have a great day's racing!

As always...
