Many handicappers have convinced themselves that they need to adjust the running times and speed ratings of a horse based on "daily track variants." They have come to believe the surface of a race track somehow changes enough from one day to the next to warrant calculating these alleged variants.
However, reality suggests track variants are mostly a myth. We will use the six furlongs distance in the following examples.
