Morning News

focus-ratings-mornoing newsGood morning... Well... It was forecast city yesterday. 5 forecasts from the 35 races (there was another but it was only a 2 horse race.) And no, I don't know why either. I keep trying to work out which races are those to bet the forecast on - to no avail. So, I'm going to fire up Wagner (my number crunching machine) and see if it can work it out for me. Yesterday I started trialing a new strategy; it's the simplest strategy I have ever tried - no filters, just "blindly back the top rated horse in these race types." There is a twist (there would have to be, wouldn't there) which is possibly why it has remained hidden for so long but, historically, over the last 4 years, this strategy has given a Strike Rate of 34.17% and a POI (Profit on Investment) of 58.86% to ISP. The strategy can be further refined to give an average of 18.63 bets a week with a Strike Rate of 35.33% and a POI (Profit on Investment) of 67.71% to ISP. I'll let you know more about this strategy after the weekend; I'm a bit wary about announcing too much too soon as it seems too good to be true - and you know what they say about things that look too good to be true.... Having said that, yesterday there were 3 selections and 2 of them won, returning a total of 5.66 points to the 3 points staked (to ISP) so I'm getting that sort of nice warm feeling that I normally only get from a glass of good Cabernet Sauvignon. Anyway, moving on, here are yesterday's results in the Traffic Light Results PDF format... Yesterday's Traffic Light Results Anyway, I'll get to that, firstly let's get on and take a quick look at yesterday's results in more detail....

Morning News

focus-ratings-mornoing newsGood morning... Well... I seem to have been on a bit of a bug fixing splurge recently. The horse age is now being displayed properly and... The distances are now correct (to the nearest furlong.) Today I shall be fixing the race age problem for Irish races (it gets shown as "unknown") before carrying on down my list of things to do/fix. For more detail, here are the results in the Traffic Light Results PDF format... Important News

latestGood morning. Today I have some very important news for you. As you know, for the last 3 years I have been looking for a way to improve Focus Ratings; to move us from our current ratings strategy (R4) to a new and improved one (which I call R5.) I have been down many blind allies and been stumped by too many dead ends. At, at times, I felt like it wasn't worth the effort but... Something inside me drove me on. Basically I wanted more winners and, more importantly, more high priced winners. A few months ago I was out for a long walk and was wondering if I was making things too complicated - I realised that I was and, so. when I got home I took a look at the simplest ratings ever designed... Clive Holt's Fine Form system.

Morning News

focus-ratings-mornoing newsGood morning... Another good day, yesterday... Where, had you blindly backed every top rated horse in every race, You would have made a profit of 32.97% on your stakes (to ISP.) This was helped by the top rated horse in the 8pm at Gowran Park (Birds Of Prey) who did slightly well to win at 12/1 (19.65 BSP.) It was the trainer's only horse at that meeting. For more detail, here are the results in the Traffic Light Results PDF format... Yesterday's Traffic Light Results Anyway, I'll get to that, firstly let's get on and take a quick look at yesterday's results in more detail....

Morning News

focus-ratings-mornoing newsGood morning... So, not such a great day yesterday but... Our 2016 strike rate is still over 30% so all is not too bad. Well,, if you're a Spurs supporter things are pretty bad but I'm not going to talk about that! I've just published a post about some of the work that I did yesterday. You can see this at... I also ought to warn you that there should (and should is the important word here) be a new link on the Morning Ratings email. This will point to my working copy of the new Expert Ratings which will show R5. Currently it still shows R4 but, if the link works, I'll start updating the code to implement my workings on R5. Anyway, I'll get to that, firstly let's get on and take a quick look at yesterday's results in more detail....

The Results Page

results1Hello... As we've been having such good results recently, I though that it might be an idea to revamp the Results Page. What I've done is created new results pages for previous years and put links to them on the main Results Page. This makes the Results Page load about ten million times faster than it used to (perhaps I'm exaggerating there, slightly?) and also has the effect that... It makes it so much easier for me to update every month end.

Lowest on Yield – 3

lowest_on_yieldThe Best Laid Plans...

I mentioned in my last post that I thought that there might be a place betting strategy to be found from the lowest yield horse (from the top three rated horses) as we had an incredible strike rate. However, as we all know... Strike Rate is Vanity - It's Profits that count! And that's certainly true here. The lowest on yield horses are going to have very low prices anyway and, that's even more so when you look at Betfair Place Prices.

Lowest on Yield – 2

lowest_on_yieldGood News and...

Well, I'm afraid that I've got some bad news for you. I've just realised that the data set that I shall be using for this analysis only contains the top three rated horses. That means that I can't analyse all the horses in the race. That means that I need to write some code to generate a new database table that contains all the rated horses with all the detail that I show in my normal results table. That means that I'll be able to offer a new spreadsheet (on the sidebar of the site) with Betfair prices (and some other good stuff) for you to use in your own analysis. I'll only be able to update that spreadsheet once a month but that should be sufficiently accurate for most needs. So, the bad news wasn't so bad, after all.

Lowest on Yield – 1

lowest_on_yieldLowest on Yield...

I recently mentioned that I believe that there is value in backing the lowest on yield horse (from the top three rated horses) in non-handicap races on the first page of the ratings (option 1 on the ratings email.) Now, I have received a lot of feedback and am now ready to start crunching the numbers. However, I have decided to test a number of possible strategies at the same time. I shall be calling these strategies Lowest on Yield Strategy or LOYS and they will be numbered as LOYS1, LOYS2 etc.

Speed Ratings

focus-ratings-speed-ratingsJust a quick heads up... I know that I said that I'm taking today off and I am. But I've just watched the ratings being compiled and, as a result, I shall be taking the Speed Ratings offline for the next week or so. This will mean that you will get your ratings and system selections earlier. There is something weird going on with the computation of the speed ratings and they seem to be taking far longer to compute than they used to. This could be why the ratings didn't work/were late on Saturday. I need to go through the code and sort this out. However, as a result of this, there will be a new (and additional) format for the ratings - I'll call this the Expert Ratings which will look like the Speed Ratings but won't have the speed figures. It will have additional features such as breakdown of Class 1 racing form by Grade; in other words, it'll be the normal ratings but with a whole lot of extra features added in. As I promised before my Mum's passing, I shall be moving the speed ratings computations to an earlier spot in the morning and, once this is done, I'll put the speed ratings back on line. It just seems wrong that those of you who don't need (or use) the Speed Ratings should have to wait for the normal ratings (and system selections) whilst the speed ratings are being computed. As always, your thoughts and comments are very welcome. My kindest regards keith-eckstein1
